AS MULHERES DO SERTÃO
The wrinkies in the life
Photographic documentation focusing on the daily lives of women in Brazil’s Northeast, particularly mature women, remains scarce compared to the volume of records found in other areas of historiography.
Yet, these women embody a history of strength, courage, and resilience in the face of the harsh climatic and social conditions of the Brazilian semi-arid region. They sustain the household routine, engage in family farming, and frequently assume leadership of the home when their partners must migrate in search of a livelihood.
Through this immersive photographic project, I aim to highlight how the unique characteristics of the Northeastern wilderness situated within the Caatinga biome and defined by relentless heat and grueling labor, leave their mark on both body and time. Compounding this are the scarcity of and precarious access to healthcare services, alongside the sociocultural and socioeconomic factors that shape the appearance and physiology of these women day by day.
It is to them that I dedicate this work: real women of the wilderness, portrayed in the spontaneity of their daily community lives, without poses, studios, or artifice.
As rugas da vida
A produção fotográfica dedicada ao cotidiano das mulheres do Nordeste brasileiro, em especial as mulheres maduras, permanece escassa quando comparada ao volume de registros em outras áreas da historiografia.
No entanto, essas mulheres encarnam uma história de força, coragem e resistência diante das severidades climáticas e sociais do semiárido brasileiro. Elas sustentam a rotina do lar, cultivam a agricultura familiar e, frequentemente, assumem a liderança da casa quando os companheiros precisam migrar em busca de sustento.
Por meio deste projeto fotográfico imersivo, busco evidenciar como as particularidades do sertão nordestino, inserido no bioma Caatinga, sob calor implacável e rotinas laborais árduas, gravam marcas no corpo e no tempo. Somam-se a isso a escassez e o acesso precário aos serviços de saúde, além dos condicionantes socioculturais e socioeconômicos que moldam, dia a dia, a fisionomia e a fisiologia dessas mulheres.
É a elas que me dedico: mulheres reais do sertão, retratadas na espontaneidade de seu cotidiano comunitário, sem poses, sem estúdios ou artifícios.
